turtle --care for eye

Can anyone shed some light on what is wrong with this Albino sea turtle its right eye is protruding, looks a bit yellow, it has partial vision on right as there is no response, its 2 weeks old. Thank you

  • Navnath Nighot I think its a abscess , try that angle
  • Laeish Pawnz U How is the parotid gland?
  • Varun Dhup I can't physically check this turtle as it is in Sri Lanka with my friend and I am in UK thanks what could be possible treatment? Navnath sir thanks I will ask my friend to get better picture please advise possible treatment. thank you
  • Varun Dhup It looks the whole eye is covered and shut due to pus
  • Varghese Nellimoottil possible vitamin A deficiency. Please try Vit A injection and report
  • Varun Dhup I have asked her to leave it in early morning sunlight with half of surface covered so that turtle can hide itself if necessary I have told her to use Vitamin drops is there a need for antibiotic?
  • Varghese Nellimoottil Go for Vit A specific drops if possible and going for an antibiotic not a necessity but observe for 3-4 days. carotene rich Diets can also be given.
  • Varun Dhup She is feeding chopped cucumber these days, thanx
  • Premal Darji 1st of all this animals cannot be kept as pets...report to local animal welfare body..
  • Premal Darji If U r in india...
  • Varun Dhup Dr. Premal ya I agree with you one can't keep this as a pet but I am not aware of the rules in Sri Lanka I will advise her anyway, thanx Gaurav sir I will ask her to get another picture for close inspection
  • Archana Bapat Yes def agree with Dr.Premal Darji .meantime make a proper setup .one question please...do sea turtles have chances of survival in fresh water?
  • Amarnath Muthukrishnan I think I would be of abcess type if clinician available locally try to aspirate the sweling in lower most site with 22 gauge or less needle if insulin needle availabe would be of great imp ....then we can proced ......without ascertaining these any vitamin sunlight wouldn't help it worsens the condition ..... as vision is imp for these animals to survival
  • Varun Dhup history behind this case is she kept in inside away from sunlight as per her msg she kept it in dark, for 3-4 days and this problem has started, so I would like to wait for couple of days let see then I will advise her to go to local vet. Dr. Archana its good you gave this discussion another wave, if well maintained survival chances are good as per my knowledge as there are many people around the world I have seen are keeping sea turtles as their pet, which is not advised but people do If anybody here have any experience of turtles please advise. thank you
  • Piyush Dubey its hyovitaminosis- A , which leads to such protuding eye ball in turtles...kindly provide him with vitamins-A injections or suppliments... plz check in net for more details..
  • Suchitra Suryavanshi Patil Sir I had turtle n it was having same problem so that shop keeper gave me methylene blue drop.don't sure but.....u can try.
  • Joseph Cyrus I am not sure but hypovitaminosis A is highly possible
  • Navnath Nighot Hypovitaminosis A is possible in turtle, but i agree with the treatment suggest by Dr. Amarnath for extraction of pus. But it is not Hypovitaminosis A as the swelling is unilatteral not bilatteral in Hyop Vit A swelling must be Biallatteral.
  • Navnath Nighot Also try Propeline fort Inj. in the space where apendages attach to the body by insuline syring 40 i.u. and provide Powder terramycine a half pinch orally
  • Joseph Cyrus It can be unilateral, especially if that is an exciting cause and all what happened to the eye is secondary in nature
  • Varun Dhup She has confirmed with me today that its prohibited in Sri Lanka to keep turtles as pets! I have advised her to take it to local vet but as of turtle is undergoing Vit A and D treatment lets see how it responds to it, also its is active than previous days.
  • Varun Dhup I would like to ask if someone brings us a pet which is prohibited or illegal should we go for treatment and also is it fair to report a person to regulatory dept. if a person is willing to take care of pet, suppose pet healthy what are the steps to follow so that these little pets can be rehabilitated to its natural environment. If anyone know about the regulation please share views, thank you
  • Amarnath Muthukrishnan We should treat the animal as vet but advice the regulatory rules if the offender doesn't bid to the rules you could confesicate the animal and should hand over to District forest Official directly ....here police is not a matter .... as responsible vet u have the rights..
  • Premal Darji if its a emergency..1st try and treat..i will still advice dont give in writting on ur official letter head..if nething has to be prescribed prescribe over a rough paper...do a small consultation with the owner and try to make him understand the laws...if hes still willing to kip such pets U cant do ne thing....just tell him not to get the pet for chkups in ur clinic....do a home visit instead ...BUt as dr amarnath advisced U can confesticate the pet and hand it over..thrs no harm in doing so if the owner dos not have a strong background to confesticate u ..and hand it over to forest...
  • Premal Darji just kidding....But after seeing for years how the sysytem works..how retaliate..how U can spoil ur image over small things..and how U can get sleepless nights for no mistake of urs.....just make a call to local animal welfare organisation ..thy are always willing to help..
  • Archana Bapat what i do is...explin everything clearly to owner.then treat after taking his sign on consent form for such cases.does this help?
  • Laeish Pawnz U I would proceed to treat the animal if I can ( as per our veterinarian oath - to relieve the animal's suffering), then contact the authorities concerned about animal welfare.. Laws differ according to countries.. But what I learnt from my studies in law from UOL, it's that if there's a panel of doctors who say they would have actually proceeded in the same way as you, then you're safe (this applies for human medicine cases); so extrapolating from there, I suppose as vets it would apply to us too..
  • Varun Dhup I feel sorry to let you all know that the little turtle is no more, she did whatever she could do, even a local Vet visited but he had no clue what to do...
  • Varun Dhup I have advised and tried to explain her that these animals are not to be kept as pet, and one should not buy or promote it by any means.
