simply anorexia- simple treatments

Ramesh Hebballi Simply anorexia? Is thr any psychological reason in pets!

we have seen many cases of anorexia in dogs when the owner is absent and I think that is related with the bond that he misses.
Feline OCD can lead to anorexia due to hair ball formation inside the gut.

Toy breeds can be anorexic if they miss their owners. Sometimes they also simply demand alteration in the diet, i have seen many dogs becoming anorexic for days after being fed chicken, and recover miraculously when given chicken again. if the dog is active, energetic and not having fever i normally ignore anorexia for a couple of days

i choose an antibiotic based on the hydration status of the patient. if the patient is well hydrated i prefer genta or amikacin. Ii use ceftriaxone when the owner can come only once a day. for oral use i prefer amoxy-clav

If there is no entropion; if a case of chronic conjunctivitis as in herpes infection can attempt to treat with ab and steroid oint. after r/o an ulcer; u coud also try to flush the duct; if the cat is not bothered other wise it might be just normal given the breed

a case by sumit virmani

Sumit Virmani Female Lab 2.5 yrs, 2nd parity, one month back. Owner calls with Sx of teat swelling.
Temp. 104, animal active, 1st right mammary gland is hard ?? & swollen, hot and painful to touch; thick discharge on squeezing (the discharge swabbed & sent for CST); Other glands normal & milk ?? can be sqeezed from other glands; LNs... not enlarged.
Rx: Inj Novaclox 500 mg, Inj Melonex plus 1 ml, Inj Avil 1 ml, Inj Tribivet 1 ml : All I/m route. Applied povidone iodine on all the teats and surrounding areas. Treatment repeated in the morning. Awaiting CST results.
Thinking of adding intramammary preparation & fluid therapy to Rx regimen .

Q 1 : Is it a long standing case or neglect / ignorance of the owner, or is it normal for the mammary gland to achieve considerable degree (I'd rate it 3 on a scale of 5) of hardness & swelling within 2 days (as per owner).
Q2 : Any suggestions / comments on the line of treatment being followed.

Thanks, in advance.

Hi,
I'll pass the first question..
Q2: How about trying to empty the teats frequently and remove the infected milk.

sumit, its looks like a case of Mastitis to me. may be related to pseudopregnency or mamary tumors. Use ceftriaxone IV as antibiotics. Apply lemon juice mixed in Castor oil over the teats to reduce pain and swellings.it works. Milk squeezing can help but not again and again as milking reflex will make more secretions. Some people in our native actauly use a masoordal paste on the teats and nipple to reduce such pain and swellings of mammae.

Thanks, Dr Ashwin & Dr. Majumdar.
I shifted to Cefstan 500 mg yesterday. Have advised the owner for hot fomentation on & around the affected area. But even though the animal appears to be alert, its the enduration that's bothering me (to some extent) & the owner (to a great extent).

canine normal T4=20-52nmol/L or 15-40ng/ml
T3=1.2-3.1nmol/L or 0.8-2ng/ml
t4 is more reliable than t3.T3 is usually normal in even Hypothyrd dogs but T4 usually below normal.Actually to tell the truth,Free T4 is best indiactive ,its just 1/10 of t4.
method of measurement: equilibrium dialysis method is superior,if not done in Equilibrium dialysis,... See moreneeds corrections.
all human lab methods are inaccurate for veterinary purose, so better to treat hypothyroidism based on clinincal signs than wait for inaccurate lab reports.

T4 20-60 nmol/L and TSH < 0.4ng/ml, analysis of T3 is of little diagnostic value in the diagnosis of hypothyroidism

The values seem to be similar to that of horses (T4=20, T3=1). What i remember is that T3 is produced in the pheripheral systems like the muscles particularly in horses( I do not know about dogs though). So in horses T4 could be potentially more useful. But i agree with Swarupmay that normally lab tests for these conditions are least useful because these values has not been validated properly for each disease condition. The lab results can be just guidelines...

JUst to make a point the reference should come from the veterinary lab. Please note t3, t4 and tsh are species specific and the only canine associated lab is the metropolis group in mumbai who do it!

@swarupmay doc, the draining tracts on the edematous leg disappeared after itraconazole treatment, still continuing with it, the disappearence of draining tracts , i thik is supporting pythiosis as the culprit

any history of colitis, pythiosis is also associated with LI signs? U should have done a culture as systemic mycosis cases are not so reported in INdia and it would have been reslly helpful. What could have been the source of the infection? Zoonoses?

not sure abt the reason. pythiosis occurs in 2 forms the GI form as well as the cutaneous form
