a case by sumit virmani

Sumit Virmani Female Lab 2.5 yrs, 2nd parity, one month back. Owner calls with Sx of teat swelling.
Temp. 104, animal active, 1st right mammary gland is hard ?? & swollen, hot and painful to touch; thick discharge on squeezing (the discharge swabbed & sent for CST); Other glands normal & milk ?? can be sqeezed from other glands; LNs... not enlarged.
Rx: Inj Novaclox 500 mg, Inj Melonex plus 1 ml, Inj Avil 1 ml, Inj Tribivet 1 ml : All I/m route. Applied povidone iodine on all the teats and surrounding areas. Treatment repeated in the morning. Awaiting CST results.
Thinking of adding intramammary preparation & fluid therapy to Rx regimen .

Q 1 : Is it a long standing case or neglect / ignorance of the owner, or is it normal for the mammary gland to achieve considerable degree (I'd rate it 3 on a scale of 5) of hardness & swelling within 2 days (as per owner).
Q2 : Any suggestions / comments on the line of treatment being followed.

Thanks, in advance.

Hi,
I'll pass the first question..
Q2: How about trying to empty the teats frequently and remove the infected milk.

sumit, its looks like a case of Mastitis to me. may be related to pseudopregnency or mamary tumors. Use ceftriaxone IV as antibiotics. Apply lemon juice mixed in Castor oil over the teats to reduce pain and swellings.it works. Milk squeezing can help but not again and again as milking reflex will make more secretions. Some people in our native actauly use a masoordal paste on the teats and nipple to reduce such pain and swellings of mammae.

Thanks, Dr Ashwin & Dr. Majumdar.
I shifted to Cefstan 500 mg yesterday. Have advised the owner for hot fomentation on & around the affected area. But even though the animal appears to be alert, its the enduration that's bothering me (to some extent) & the owner (to a great extent).
